If you’re planning a trip to London, there are some attractions you simply can’t afford to miss. These are the top 5 things to do—your must-see list for the city. To create this guide, we used visitor traffic data from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) and combined it with our own knowledge of tourism trends. While three of the highest-traffic destinations made the cut, two did not (V&A Museum and Southbank Centre). Instead, we included more traditional landmarks that remain essential experiences and even added a couple of honorable mentions at the end.

Each attraction is paired with a travel card from the Let’s Plan a Trip to London itinerary planning card game. The game helps you sort through 54 top attractions, providing both price and popularity scores (based on tourist interest) to guide your choices. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or a week, this list will help you hit all the right spots!

Top 5 Most Popular Things to Do in London

It’s not so tough to London’s five most popular things to do. It’s even possible to do it all in one (very full) day. We wouldn’t recommend that though. Rather we recommend a day and a half to two days to get all this done. You’ll also notice that the borders of the cards for these locations vary in color. That’s because in the game Let’s Plan a Trip to London cards the colors of borders represent where an attraction is located on the map – that means that these 5 things to do are not all close together, unfortunately, so there would be some travel if you made them your itinerary.

#1 The British Museum

The British Museum easily earns its spot on any list of the top 5 most popular things to do in London, attracting millions of visitors every year. Its appeal is hard to resist—world-famous exhibits, free entry, and a global reputation as one of the best museums on Earth. From the Rosetta Stone to Egyptian mummies and the Elgin Marbles, the collection is massive and filled with treasures that span the entire history of human civilization. It’s the kind of place where one visit isn’t enough—there’s just too much to take in.

But it’s not all admiration and wonder. A lot of these artifacts were taken during Britain’s colonial days, and that history brings up some tough questions. Countries like Greece and Egypt have long argued that these treasures belong back home. I can’t help but feel a bit torn when I visit—blown away by the beauty and significance of the displays, but also a little uncomfortable knowing how they got here.

Still, the British Museum is one of those can’t-miss attractions that deserves its top spot. It’s thought-provoking and awe-inspiring all at once. And after hours of exploring, there’s nothing better than grabbing a coffee on Museum Street to take it all in.

#2 The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum lands at #2 on the list of top 5 most popular things to do in London, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a place where science meets spectacle, offering visitors the chance to marvel at dinosaurs, precious gems, and rare creatures from across the planet. Walking into the Hintze Hall, with its iconic blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling, is a jaw-dropping moment that sets the tone for the rest of the visit.

The museum’s exhibits are designed to spark curiosity and wonder—and they deliver. You can stand next to full-sized dinosaur skeletons, get up close with crystals from deep inside the Earth, or experience the raw power of nature in the Earthquake Simulator. It’s especially great for families, with plenty of hands-on activities and interactive displays to keep kids entertained (and learning).

As one of the most visited museums in the UK, the Natural History Museum has a worldwide reputation for scientific discovery, and admission is completely free. Whether you’re into fossils, precious stones, or biodiversity, this museum is a can’t-miss stop that’s both educational and inspiring. After soaking in all the natural wonders, head outside to explore Exhibition Road or grab a bite in nearby South Kensington. This is the kind of place that sticks with you long after you leave.

#3 The Tate Modern

The Tate Modern takes #3 on the list of top 5 most popular things to do in London, known for its bold and immersive exhibits that captivate both art lovers and casual visitors. Housed in a former power station along the River Thames, the museum’s vast Turbine Hall is famous for showcasing large-scale installations that transform the space into something unforgettable.

I still vividly remember visiting during The Weather Project—a giant, glowing artificial sun by Olafur Eliasson. It felt like the whole of London had come to lay out under its warmth, stretching across the floor, basking in the golden light like it was the first sunny day in ages. That wasn’t just art—it was a community experience that captured the mood of a cloudy London perfectly.

The museum also boasts an impressive collection of works by Picasso, Warhol, Rothko, and other modern masters, alongside cutting-edge contemporary pieces. Plus, the viewing platform on the Blavatnik Building offers one of the best panoramic views of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and the city skyline.

With free admission (though some special exhibits are ticketed), Tate Modern is a must-see destination where art, architecture, and human connection converge. After your visit, stroll along the Southbank or stop by Borough Market for a perfect end to your day.

#4 Tower of London

The Tower of London ranks at #4 on the list of top 5 most popular things to do in London, and it’s hands down the best place in the city to get that classic European castle experience. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066, this fortress has a long and storied history filled with royal intrigue, betrayal, and dark secrets.

A major highlight is the chance to see the Crown Jewels—an awe-inspiring collection of royal regalia still used in ceremonies today. Be warned, though, there’s usually a bit of a wait, but it’s absolutely worth it for a glimpse at these dazzling symbols of monarchy. Throughout the ramparts and tower rooms, you’ll find a variety of exhibits covering everything from medieval armory to the famous ravens said to protect the kingdom.

Guided tours with the Beefeaters (or Yeoman Warders) bring the Tower’s dark past to life in both entertaining and chilling detail. You’ll hear tales of famous prisoners like Anne Boleyn and the Princes in the Tower, whose disappearance remains a mystery shrouded in legend. For those who like a bit of the macabre, the torture chamber exhibit showcases the brutal side of medieval justice.

With its towering walls, historic architecture, and centuries-old traditions, the Tower of London is a fascinating glimpse into Britain’s royal and military history. After your visit, take a stroll along the Thames Path to soak in views of Tower Bridge and the river, rounding out an unforgettable step into London’s past.

#5 Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace takes #5 on the list of top 5 most popular things to do in London, and while you can tour the State Rooms during the summer months, what really makes it a must-visit is how much you can experience for free. Just standing at the palace gates, surrounded by other visitors, feels like a moment you can’t miss—similar to standing outside the White House. It’s one of those iconic places you’ve seen on TV during royal events like weddings, coronations, and jubilees, and being there in person feels almost surreal.

Of course, visitors love checking whether the Royal Standard flag is flying—if it’s up, the King is in residence! The Changing of the Guard ceremony is another major draw, with uniformed soldiers, military bands, and precision marching showcasing a time-honored tradition. It’s one of the best free shows in London and draws thousands of spectators every day.

If you visit during the summer tour season, you’ll get to see the State Rooms, which include some of the most opulent spaces in the palace. Highlights include the Throne Room, Ballroom, and Grand Staircase, all lavishly decorated with royal portraits, chandeliers, and historic treasures. The tour also offers an inside look at how the palace functions during official events.

For a complete experience, take a stroll along The Mall, the tree-lined avenue that connects the palace to Trafalgar Square, or relax in St. James’s Park with its lakes and gardens. Whether you’re there for the guards, the gardens, or just to say you’ve been, Buckingham Palace offers a quintessential London experience that lives up to its reputation.

Honorable Mentions

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a couple of additional attractions that also deserve to be noted for their popularity. Five just isn’t enough people, cut me a break!

Honorable Mention – West End Theatres

It’s impossible to talk about the most popular things to do in London without mentioning the West End theatres. The number of visitors is staggering—perhaps 10x that of the British Museum if you include all 30 of them (roughly) —but unlike a museum, the West End delivers something fresh every time. With a wide range of musicals, dramas, and comedies, there’s truly something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of long-running classics like Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera or newer hits like Hamilton.

The West End is unique in that it attracts both locals and tourists, creating a vibrant, shared cultural experience. However, it’s not exactly a budget-friendly option—tickets can be pricey, making a night out at the theatre a real treat. For many, though, it’s well worth it to experience the spectacle, talent, and atmosphere that define London’s iconic theatre scene. If you’re looking to splurge on a memorable night out, the West End is hard to beat.

If you’re looking to enjoy a show without breaking the bank, check out TKTS Leicester Square for same-day discount tickets. You can also find deals through official websites or last-minute apps, especially for midweek performances. With a little planning, you can experience the magic of the West End at a fraction of the price!

Honorable Mention – The Victoria and Albert Museum

For raw visitor numbers, the Victoria and Albert Museum actually rivals or surpasses even the Tower of London and possibly Buckingham Palace (though that’s tricky to measure). However, the crowd at the V&A is a bit different—it tends to be more local, sophisticated, and often drawn by the museum’s world-class exhibitions. Known as the leading museum of art, design, and fashion, the V&A offers incredible variety, from Renaissance sculptures to contemporary fashion exhibits.

Special exhibitions, like Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty or Hollywood Costume, have become cultural phenomena, attracting both art lovers and curious newcomers alike. Whether you’re fascinated by historical artifacts or modern design, the V&A offers something inspiring at every turn. Its permanent collections are equally impressive, with treasures like medieval tapestries, decorative arts, and the Cast Courts, featuring plaster replicas of iconic works like Michelangelo’s David.

We couldn’t leave it off the list because it’s not just a museum—it’s a creative wonderland that blends history, art, and innovation. And with free admission, it’s an easy addition to any London itinerary. Whether you’re catching an exhibition or wandering through the galleries, the V&A promises a rich and rewarding experie
