10 Day London Itinerary – Make the Most of Your Trip

There aren’t many cities in the world that can stand up to a 10 day trip and leave you feeling like there’s still more to see, but London is one of the very few. With this 10 day itinerary my goal is to expose you to all of the cultural and tourist highlights, while also letting you take your time to experience London like a Londoner in some of the cooler districts.

Day 1: Iconic Sights & British History

  • Start your trip with a visit to Tate Britain, home to the largest collection of British art in the world. It’s often overshadowed by Tate Modern, but the works here—like Turner’s dramatic seascapes and Millais’ Ophelia—offer a deep dive into Britain’s artistic heritage. It’s the perfect way to ease into the city’s rich history and culture without the overwhelming crowds.
  • From Tate Britain, head north (you’ll basically be walking north all day) to Westminster Abbey, a place that’s witnessed every British coronation since 1066. Walking through its grand halls is like stepping into a time capsule. Be sure to visit Poet’s Corner, where legends like Shakespeare and Jane Austen are honored. It’s awe-inspiring (and a little eerie) knowing how many kings, queens, and cultural giants rest beneath your feet.
  • A short walk away, you’ll find Parliament and Big Ben. Recently restored, Big Ben’s clock face gleams against the London skyline. Take a moment to admire the Gothic architecture, and for a great photo op, cross Westminster Bridge to capture both Parliament and the river in one shot.
  • Next, visit the Churchill War Rooms, where Winston Churchill and his government directed Britain’s efforts during World War II. The preserved bunkers still contain original maps, phones, and even Churchill’s personal desk. The audio guide brings the tense atmosphere of wartime London to life, making it a fascinating stop for history buffs.
  • Continue to Buckingham Palace (consider a tour), where you may catch the Changing of the Guard (check the schedule). Even if not, St. James’s Park nearby offers stunning views of the palace, perfect for a leisurely stroll. This is one of those “must-see” spots your friends will ask about when you get home.
  • Walk to Trafalgar Square, a hub of activity surrounded by historic monuments and fountains. The lion statues and Nelson’s Column are landmarks in their own right, and you’ll often find street performers adding to the vibrant scene. During the holidays, the giant Christmas tree, a gift from Norway, is a festive highlight.
  • Next, explore The National Gallery, located right on Trafalgar Square. It’s free to enter and houses masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Monet’s Water Lilies. Don’t feel pressured to see everything; focus on a few favorite works and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
  • End your day at Piccadilly Circus, where the neon lights and bustling crowds create a lively vibe. Known as London’s mini Times Square, it’s a great spot to take in the energy of the city. If you’re up for it, head into Soho for dinner and drinks—there’s something for every taste, from traditional British fare to cutting-edge international cuisine.

Day 2: Culture, Shopping & Entertainment

  • Start your morning with a visit to the Abbey Road crossing, famous for The Beatles’ iconic album cover. It’s a bit of a tourist hotspot, but it’s still fun to channel your inner Beatle and take a few photos as you recreate that legendary moment. You might even meet other fans, which makes it feel like a communal experience.
  • From there, head to The Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street. The museum is a whimsical tribute to Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective, with period furnishings and curios that recreate Holmes’ world. Even if you’re not a die-hard fan, it’s a charming stop that brings Victorian London to life.
  • Next, spend the late morning and early afternoon at The British Museum. It’s one of the largest and most impressive museums in the world, with highlights like the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, and the Parthenon Marbles. Pro tip: take a break at the Great Court Café under the stunning glass ceiling. It’s a great spot to regroup and plan the rest of your day.
  • After the museum, make your way to Oxford Street, Europe’s busiest shopping street. Explore everything from high-street brands like Zara and Uniqlo to flagship stores. For a more upscale experience, head to Selfridges, known for its innovative window displays and diverse range of designer and luxury goods. If you’re visiting around the holidays, the Christmas lights and festive décor will make your shopping experience even more magical.
  • Wrap up your day with an evening at a West End theater. The West End is world-famous for its variety of shows, from major musicals to thought-provoking plays. Whether you’re a fan of classic productions or something more experimental, there’s always something to fit your mood. Be sure to book tickets in advance, as Saturday and weekend performances tend to sell out quickly.

Stroll along the streets lined with pastel-colored townhouses and explore the Portobello Road Market, which opens early and offers everything from antiques to street food. It’s a perfect place to browse and soak in the lively, yet relaxed weekend vibe. Stop by a cozy café for breakfast—there are plenty of charming spots tucked away in side streets.
  • After your leisurely morning, head out to the Harry Potter Studio Tour in Leavesden. You’ll need to book tickets well in advance, as it’s a popular attraction. The journey takes about an hour by train or coach from central London, so plan accordingly. Once there, you’ll step into the magical world of Hogwarts. Explore iconic sets like the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, and Dumbledore’s Office. The studio also showcases the film’s special effects, costumes, and props—perfect for fans who want an immersive experience.

After taking in the art, step onto the riverside terrace for beautiful views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and Millennium Bridge.
  • Walk along the South Bank to Borough Market, one of London’s most beloved food markets. The market is a sensory overload, filled with vendors offering gourmet cheeses, street food, and fresh pastries. Saturdays are particularly lively, making it a great time to sample the best of London’s food scene. Try a freshly made scotch egg or a flat white from one of the artisanal coffee stalls.
  • From the market, head to The Shard, London’s tallest skyscraper. If you didn’t visit on your first day, this is your chance to take in panoramic views of the entire city from the observation deck. Fun fact: on a clear day, you can see as far as Windsor Castle from the top.
  • Next, walk to Tower Bridge. You can simply snap some photos from outside or opt for the Sky Bridge experience, which offers views of the Thames through a glass-floored walkway. This is one of London’s most iconic structures and always a hit with first-time visitors.
  • Right next to Tower Bridge is the Tower of London, one of the city’s most historic landmarks. Walk the ancient ramparts, visit the Crown Jewels, and explore the infamous tower where prisoners like Anne Boleyn were held. The Yeoman Warders (or Beefeaters) offer excellent tours full of dark, yet fascinating, stories of the Tower’s past.
  • Head over to St. Paul’s Cathedral in the afternoon. Climb to the Whispering Gallery and continue to the Golden Gallery for breathtaking views of the city. Inside, the vast dome and intricate mosaics are awe-inspiring.
  • As the sun sets, join a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour in Whitechapel. Your guide will take you through the eerie streets of the East End, sharing the chilling story of one of London’s most infamous serial killers. It’s a fascinating (and a bit spooky) way to dive into the city’s Victorian history.
  • End your night in Shoreditch, one of London’s trendiest neighborhoods. Known for its vibrant street art, indie bars, and live music venues, Shoreditch is the perfect spot to experience London’s nightlife.
