Winter is a surprisingly great time to visit London. Sure, it’ll be cold, and you probably won’t see much sun—but the British know how to make the most of any weather. Wrap up warm, hop between cozy pubs and charming coffee shops, and you’ll be just fine. In fact, you’ll get to experience London at its most magical, glowing with festive lights like one giant Christmas tree!

We used the Let’s Plan a Trip to London deck—54 attraction cards packed with key details like popularity, cost, and visit times—along with first-hand knowledge of London during the holidays, to create two festive itineraries:

  1. A 2-day walking option (if you’re ready to brave the cold), and
  2. A 3-day indoor option for those who prefer their creature comforts.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with family, or as a first-time visitor, you can shuffle and customize your trip plan to match your style. What follows are some of the best attractions and activities to enjoy during the winter season (December through January).

Of course, no single itinerary works for everyone, so feel free to mix and match ideas from both plans to create your perfect holiday adventure!

2 Day London Christmas Itinerary – Braving the Cold

For this two day tour of London’s sights in winter you’ll be putting on your gloves and scarf because you’ll be walking between the key attractions. Don’t forry, there are plenty of rest stops along the way and warm interiors where you can recharge with a cup of hot chocolate!

Day 1: Parks, Palaces & Holiday Magic

  • Begin your day with a stroll through Hyde Park, where Winter Wonderland adds festive cheer to the season. This holiday festival offers ice skating, Christmas markets, rides, and seasonal treats like hot chocolate and mulled wine. If you prefer a quieter morning, explore the frosty paths around the Serpentine Lake and enjoy the peaceful winter atmosphere.
  • Head to Harrods, where the Christmas window displays dazzle passersby. Inside, wander through the legendary Food Halls, brimming with festive treats and luxury gifts. The toy department is a magical highlight for children and adults alike during the holiday season.
  • Next, take the Tube to Westminster Station and emerge right by Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. Walk around this iconic area and admire the Houses of Parliament. At Westminster Abbey, soak in the grandeur of the Gothic architecture, which is beautifully enhanced by the glow of candlelight during Christmas carol services held throughout December.
  • For a picturesque view, cross Westminster Bridge, where you can capture classic photos of Big Ben and the Thames.
  • Warm up with a visit to The National Gallery, home to masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Monet’s Water-Lilies. It’s a peaceful escape from the cold, offering world-renowned art to admire at your leisure.
  • Outside, Trafalgar Square becomes a hub of holiday activity. The giant Christmas tree, gifted annually by Norway since 1947 as a gesture of thanks for Britain’s WWII support, stands beautifully lit. Carol singers often gather here in the evenings, creating a heartwarming festive atmosphere.
  • End your day in the West End, where the theaters buzz with energy and dazzling lights. With more than 30 shows running, you can choose from musicals, comedies, or dramas. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a magical winter day in London.

Explore the historic White Tower, marvel at the Crown Jewels, and walk the medieval ramparts, imagining the tower’s rich and sometimes chilling history.
  • From there, walk to Tower Bridge and cross the famous glass-floor walkway, offering spectacular views of the river below. The Victorian-era bridge is beautifully lit in the shorter winter daylight, creating a postcard-perfect scene.
  • Continue to The Shard, Western Europe’s tallest building. Visit the observation deck for panoramic views of London’s skyline, or settle into one of the mid-level restaurants for a warm drink or a leisurely lunch while you watch the sun set over the city.
  • Head to Borough Market, where the holiday season transforms this foodie haven into a festive feast for the senses. Stalls are stocked with seasonal goodies like mulled wine, artisan cheeses, and mince pies. Enjoy browsing the decorated market and sampling warm street food to keep the chill at bay.
  • In the evening, take the Tube to Camden Market, where the night markets come alive under twinkling lights. Browse quirky stalls for gifts, handmade crafts, and vintage finds. Camden’s alternative vibe is particularly cozy in winter, with pubs and live music venues providing a warm, lively atmosphere. Grab a pint at a historic pub or catch a gig to round out your night in one of London’s most iconic neighborhoods.

3 Day London Christmas Itinerary – Staying Warm Inside

For this fresh three-day itinerary, we’ll still be visiting London’s most festive winter hotspots—but with less walking and more chances to stay warm (personally, I do not like being cold!). Whether you’re browsing iconic department stores or taking in the sights from the comfort of a Thames cruise, this plan lets you enjoy the magic of London without braving the cold too much.

Day 1: Sights, Shopping & Cozy Winter Views

  • Start your day with a Thames Cruise, one of the best ways to see London while staying warm. Glide along the river and take in iconic sights like Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London. The boat’s interior offers heated seating, making it a perfect option for chilly mornings.
  • Head to Regent Street, which dazzles with one of London’s most famous Christmas light displays. Explore the historic Liberty London, a stunning half-timbered department store filled with festive decorations and luxury gifts. From there, wander to Carnaby Street, where creative, colorful holiday lights give the area a quirky charm. Warm up with a treat from a cozy coffee shop or bakery, such as a rich hot chocolate or freshly baked mince pie to keep the holiday spirit going.
  • Make your way to Leicester Square, which transforms into a bustling Christmas Market during the festive season. Browse stalls selling seasonal gifts, mulled wine, and holiday treats while soaking in the lively atmosphere.
  • Stop for lunch in Chinatown, where bright red lanterns contrast beautifully with the winter skies. Warm up with hearty dishes like roast duck, noodles, or dim sum, and enjoy the lively, festive buzz of the area.
  • After lunch, head to The London Eye. Be prepared for a chilly wait in line, but once inside the pod, you’ll enjoy warmth and panoramic views as the city begins to light up for the evening. It’s a magical experience watching Big Ben, Parliament, and the South Bank glow against the night sky.
  • Once off the Eye, take a walk along the South Bank, where the riverside paths are illuminated with seasonal lights. If you’re lucky, you may come across a pop-up winter market selling hot drinks and festive snacks.
  • End your day at The National Theater, where you can catch one of London’s renowned productions. The theater’s cozy interior is a welcome respite from the cold, and many of their shows go on to become major West End or film successes. It’s a perfect way to wrap up your evening in warm, cultural comfort.
