As a Brit who lived in London for three years before moving to the U.S., I’ve helped dozens of friends plan their trips and know exactly what stands out to an American visitor. Some sights are truly unmissable, while others, though famous, might not be the best use of your time.

A week in London is a big investment, but it’s one of Europe’s best cities for families. With iconic sights, interactive museums, and plenty for all ages, the key is balancing attractions with downtime.

Day 1: London’s Icons & A Spooky Adventure

  • Start the day at Big Ben and Parliament, where you’ll attempt to squeeze the whole family into a selfie with London’s most famous clock tower.
  • Head to Westminster Abbey, the stunning site of royal coronations and a resting place for kings, queens, and poets. Is it a bit eerie knowing you’re walking over tombs? Maybe—but it’s all part of the history!
  • Take a break with a ride on The London Eye, offering panoramic views of the city and a chance to sit and take it all in.
  • For older kids who love a thrill, explore The London Dungeon, where theatrical performances and spooky storytelling bring London’s dark past to life. For younger kids, the SEA LIFE Aquarium is also close by. Or for. alow cost option consider the small water-front playground and promenade attractions.
  • End the day with a Thames cruise, gliding past iconic landmarks. For an extra special experience, consider a dinner cruise, enjoying a meal with unbeatable river views.

Day 2: Towers, Views & a Taste of History

  • Head to the Tower of London and walk the ancient ramparts. Be sure to visit the tower where the Princes were held and the torture displays—it’s a guaranteed way to spook the kids with some royal mystery.
  • Cross the Tower Bridge Walkway, taking in incredible views from the glass floor. The best photo op? Stand outside the Tower of London and capture the bridge stretching south.
  • Take a break at The Shard, a grand skyscraper that rises to a graceful point, where you can relax in a sky-high restaurant or visit the Sky Garden for breathtaking city views.
  • Explore the Tate Modern, where the vast Turbine Hall hosts grand and immersive exhibits and the gallery will stretch your minds.
  • End the day at Shakespeare’s Globe—if you still have energy! Otherwise, find a cozy riverside pub to cool your heels and soak in the atmosphere.

  • Start the day at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, a change of pace from London’s usual sights. Dive into the history of tennis, see trophies up close, and step onto Centre Court if tours are running.
  • Explore Wimbledon Village, a charming area with boutique shops, cafés, and a countryside feel. If you have time, take a stroll on Wimbledon Common—a peaceful green space where you might even spot a Womble!
  • Head back to central London for a relaxing break in Hyde Park. Walk by the Serpentine, visit Speaker’s Corner, or just let the kids run free.
  • Shop along Oxford Street, stopping at Selfridges, one of the city’s most famous department stores. Whether you browse high-end fashion or just take in the grand displays, it’s an iconic experience. Stop for lunch at St. Christopher’s Place, a little hidden gem just off Oxford Street, accessible through a narrow alleyway near Selfridges. A charming pedestrian area packed with great restaurants, cafés, and boutique shops.
  • Visit The British Museum, home to world-famous treasures like the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles. The long line outside? That’s just for the bag check—entry moves quickly!
  • If you woke up early enough and still have energy, climb to the Whispering Gallery at St Paul’s Cathedral for a unique acoustic experience and a stunning view over the city.
  • Treat yourself to a Chinese feast in Chinatown, with plenty of fantastic options for dim sum, roast duck, or sizzling hot pots. If the weather is nice consider sitting outside to watch the world go by.
  • End the day with a movie in Leicester Square, where the UK’s biggest red carpet premieres happen. Choose a grand cinema for the full blockbuster experience or an arthouse theater for something unique.

Spend some time with Van Gogh’s iconic works, but don’t get too hung up—there’s plenty more to see. If you’re still in the mood for more art, the National Portrait Gallery, just behind it, offers a fascinating look at Britain’s most famous faces.
  • Take a break in Trafalgar Square, soaking in the atmosphere and watching the world go by. This historic square is always buzzing with energy, from street performers to political protests.
  • Make your way to Buckingham Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony (usually at 10:45 am, but check the schedule in advance). Afterward, take a stroll through St. James’s Park, one of London’s most beautiful green spaces, where you might spot the famous pelicans.
  • Head to Regent Street for some classic London shopping, starting with a stop at Hamleys, the world’s most famous toy store. For a change of pace, slip down Great Marlborough Street to reach Carnaby Street, a cool little enclave packed with independent boutiques and stylish shops. If you’re up for a splurge, visit Liberty, a high-end department store housed in a stunning Tudor-style building.
  • In the afternoon, head out to North London and step into the wizarding world at the Harry Potter Studio Tour. Walk through iconic sets, see original props, and discover the behind-the-scenes magic that brought the films to life—a must for any Potter fan.

  • Start the day at Camden Market, where you can grab a unique breakfast from one of the many food stalls—anything from fresh pastries to street food from around the world. While you’re there, take a stroll along Camden Locks, watching boats navigate the historic canal system.
  • Walk through Primrose Hill, a peaceful escape (and home to many celebrities) with one of the best panoramic views of London. From the top, you’ll spot famous landmarks like The Shard and St. Paul’s Cathedral in the distance. Continue along the canals to London Zoo, where kids (and adults) can get up close with everything from lions to lemurs.
  • If you’re a music fan, now’s the time to make your Abbey Road pilgrimage. Grab a photo at the famous zebra crossing and check out Abbey Road Studios—just be patient, as traffic waits for no Beatles fan.
  • Head to Madame Tussauds for some lifelike celebrity selfies. The British figures might not all be familiar, but the Marvel and Star Wars exhibits are always a hit.
  • End the day with a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour, a fascinating (and eerie) way to explore Victorian London. Walk the streets of Whitechapel, hear the chilling stories, and see landmarks connected to the infamous crimes, all while getting a feel for the grittier (and trendier) side of the East End.

Day 6: Football, Shopping & A Night at the Theatre

  • Start the day at Chelsea FC Museum and Stadium Tour, a must for football fans. Explore the club’s rich history, see the trophy room, and walk through the players’ tunnel for a taste of matchday magic.

  • End the day with a West End show—whether it’s a blockbuster musical or a gripping play, London’s theatre scene is every bit as spectacular as Broadway.

Day 7: A Royal Send-Off in Windsor

  • Instead of spending your last night in a generic airport hotel, do what we always do—stay in Windsor, just as close to Heathrow but far more charming. This gives you time to explore Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. A royal residence for over 1,000 years, it’s still in use today and was a favorite retreat of Queen Elizabeth II. Inside, you’ll find the magnificent State Apartments, adorned with masterpieces by Rembrandt and Rubens, as well as St. George’s Chapel, the final resting place of monarchs, including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Stroll through Windsor town, a beautiful riverside spot with quaint shops, cozy pubs, and historic streets. Just across the bridge, you’ll find Eton College, the prestigious boys’ school that has educated 20 British Prime Ministers and generations of royals, including Princes William and Harry.
  • If you’re traveling with kids—or just want a completely different way to spend your last day—swap the royal grandeur for pure fun at Legoland Windsor. With over 50 rides, live shows, and incredible Lego-built attractions, it’s a great way to end the trip on a high note.
  • No matter which option you choose, Windsor is the perfect way to wrap up your 7-day London itinerary, giving you a memorable final experience before heading to Heathrow for your flight home.
